What is Social Emotional Learning?

Social Emotional Learning is how children and adults learn to understand and manage emotions, set goals, show empathy for others, establish positive relationships, and make responsible decisions (as defined by CASEL: Collaborative for Academic, Social and Emotional Learning

Social Emotional Learning ("SEL") classes are once a week for every class, every grade. Each grade is learning about the same topic, but at different, age-appropriate levels.

Competencies of SEL: Just like there are state standards for educational curriculum, there are competencies for SEL:

  • Self-Awareness: The ability to accurately recognize one’s own emotions, thoughts, and values and how they influence behavior.

  • Self-Management: The ability to successfully regulate one’s emotions, thoughts, and behaviors in different situations

  • Social Awareness: The ability to take the perspective of and empathize with others

  • Relationship Skills: The ability to establish and maintain healthy and rewarding relationships with diverse individuals and groups.

  • Responsible Decision Making: The ability to make constructive choices about personal behavior and social interactions

All of these competencies are woven into the SEL curriculum throughout the year.

The Mindful Forest is place in my room for students to re-set, calm down, or take a moment away. Students are welcome even if I am teaching. There are curtains, and classes have been taught to respect others and continue learning.
