What's Happening in SEL Class?

Each week there is a different topic that builds on the last. Themes are the same across grades, but activities, delivery of lesson, and level of the lesson is varies.

We start the year with feelings: expanding our vocabulary (instead of just 'mad', 'sad', 'happy', learning other feelings words such as 'frustrated', 'disappointed', and 'joyful') which helps kids name their feelings. Naming feelings is part of learning to use words instead of their body to express feelings, recognizing how others feel, empathy/sympathy, and the foundation for many other lessons.

We cover other topics like making friends, problem solving, conflict resolution, empathy/sympathy, perspective taking, choices & consequences, and there is a four-week unit on community.

Teachers are given follow-up materials (games, activities, reflection sheets, etc.) to continue the lesson and SEL in their classes.

Take a look at the curriculum map! Sometimes there are changes... Lessons can get re-organized or substituted for another topic depending on the needs of the school, classes, or continuing a topic.
